A shell is fixed from a long-range gun with an initial velocity u=1000 ms at an angle 30
to the horizon. How long will the shell be in the air ? At what distances from the
gun will
it fall to the ground ? The gun and the point where the shell lands are on the same
horizontal line.

Velocity of the shell is 360 m/s

Given :

  • A shell of mass 10 kg is fired from a gun of mass 600 kg . The gun recoil with a velocity of 6 m/s

To Find :

The muzzle velocity of the shell

  • Solution :

Simply apply law of conservation of momentum.

\begin{gathered}\implies \bf Initial\ momentum=Final\ momentum\\\\\implies \bf (M_s+M_g)0=M_s.V_{s}-Mg.V_{recoil}\\\\ \implies M_g.V_{recoil}=M_s.V_{s}\\\\\implies \bf 600*6=10*V_s\\\\\implies \bf 360=V_s\\\\\implies \bf V_s=360\ m/s\end{gathered}

So , velocity of the shell is 360 m/s
