Solution:Mass of the shell =40 kg

Velocity with which the shell is moving= 18 m/sec:

Let V  the velocity of 22 fragrance of masses:

Applying the law of conservation of linear momentum:40x18= 40/22xv      therefore,

v= 18x22=396 m/sec:

Kinetic energy of the shell before explosion:

k1=1/2x 40x(18)2 =6480 J:

Kinetic energy of the shell after  explosion: k2 = 1/2x40/22x(396)2 =156816 J:

Therefore amount of energy released=156816-6480=150336 J
