A shell of mass 6 kg is fired from a gun of mass
600 kg. If the recoil velocity of the gun is 3 m/s,
find the muzzle velocity of the shell.​

Answer:

According to the conservation of momentum,

m1v1=m2v2

Momentum of shell=momentum of gun

6×v1=600×3

v1=300m/s.

according to the conservation law of linear momentum,

m1u1+ m2u2 =m1v1 + m2v2

6×0 + 600×0 = 6v1 + 1800

0 = 6v1 + 1800

-1800 = 6v1

v1 = -1800/6

v1 = -300 m/s
