since there is no external force,so the momentum is conserved

mv = m/3*0 + 2m/3*x

x=3v/2

Answer:

The velocity of the other piece is 3v/2 ms⁻¹

Explanation:

Given;

    Complete mass = m

       Mass at rest = m/3

Remaining mass = m - m/3 = 2m/3

 velocity =v m/s

Let the velocity of the remaining piece be v₁.

Now, we know that, by formula that;

      Initial Momentum = Final momentum (for given case)

           mv = m/3 ×0 + 2m/3 × v₁

              v = 2/3 × v₁

            v₁ = 3v/2 ms⁻¹

Hope it helps! ;-))
