it is due to the higher density of marine water comparing to fresh water.. as density of water increases the capacity of shrinking decreases

Marine water have salt in it, which increases its density as well as buoyancy.
Fresh water don't have such solution to offer buoyancy.
Hence, ship dips larger depth in fresh water as compared to in marine water.
