A ship is moving due East with a velocity of 12 meter per sec a truck is moving a cross on the ship with velocity 4 meter per sec.A monkey is climbing the vertical pole mounted on the truck with velocity of 3 meter per sec. Find the velocity of monkey as observed by the man on shore

This is a question on relative speed.

The speed of the truck relative to the speed of ship is :

4 + 12 = 16 m/s

The speed of the monkey relative to the speed of the truck :

This is a question on the resultant velocity of perpendicular velocity.

The velocity of the truck is perpendicular to the velocity of the monkey.

The relative velocity of the monkey is the hypotenuse velocity of the right angled formed.

This is given by pythagoras theorem :

3² + 16² = 265

Speed = √265 = 16.28 m/s

Answer:

13m/s

Explanation:

Speed of monkey is 12 m/s for viewer in positive x direction

Whereas in y direction it is 4 m/s as if truck

And 3m/s in z direction as it is climbing

Now velocity that man standing at shore will observe is √(12)^2+(4)^2+((3)^2 = 13
