Given:

A ship is moving due east with a speed of 3 m/s. A man runs across the deck due North with the speed of 3√2 m/s.

To find:

Speed of man relative to the ship.

Calculation:

First observe the attached diagram to understand the position of the Velocity vectors.

Let Velocity of ship be v_(s) and Velocity of man be v_(m).

v_(s) = 3 m/s towards North

v_(m) = 3√2 m/s towards East.

 \therefore \: v_{ms} =  \sqrt{ {3}^{2} +  {(3 \sqrt{2} )}^{2}  }

  =  >  \: v_{ms} =  \sqrt{ 9 +  18 }

  =  >  \: v_{ms} =  \sqrt{ 27 }

  =  >  \: v_{ms} = 5.19 \: m {s}^{ - 1}

So, Velocity of man w.r.t to ship is 5.19 m/s
