A ship moves with a speed of 3m/sec along east and then turn through 90° along north and cover same distance with a speed of 4m/sec. Calculate it's average speed and average velocity

Average Speed =   3.43 m/s

Average Velocity =  2.42 m/s

Explanation:

Let Say Distance covered in each direction = D m

Ship moves with a speed of 3m/sec along east

Time Taken = D/3  sec

Ship moves with a speed of 4m/sec along North

Time Taken = D/4  sec

Total Distance Covered = D + D = 2D  m

Total Time Taken = D/3  + D/4  = 7D/12   sec

Average Speed = 2D/(7D/12) =  24/7  m/s

Average Speed  = 3.43 m/s

Displacement = √D² + D² = D√2

Average Velocity = D√2/((7D/12)  = 12√2/7  m/s

Average Velocity =  2.42 m/s
