correct question: A ship of mass 3 * 10⁷ kg initially at rest is pulled by a force 3 * 10⁴ N through distance of 20 m. Assuming that the resistance due to water is negligible, the speed of the ship is

Solution : a/c to question;

  • Mass of ship, m = 3 * 10⁷ kg
  • Force, F = 3 * 10⁴ N
  • displacement, s = 20 m

Now, we use formula of force;

⟹ force = mass * acceleration

⟹ acceleration = force/mass

⟹ acceleration = 3 * 10⁴/3 * 10⁷

⟹ acceleration = 10^( - 3 ) m/s²

We know that, initial velocity, u is 0.

Now, we use kinematical equation

⟹ v² = u² + 2as

⟹ v² - u² = 2as

⟹ v² - 0 = 2 * 10^( - 3 ) * 20

⟹ v² = 40 * 10^( - 3 )

⟹ v² = 40 * 10^( - 3 )

⟹ v = √0.04

⟹ v = 0.2 m/s

Answer : Hence, the speed of ship is 0.2 m/s

More info :

⟹ 0.2 m/s = 0.2 * 1/1000/1/3600

= 0.2 * 3600/1000 = 0.2 * 3.6 = 0.72 km/hr

{The speed of ship is 0.72 km/hr}
