The distance between the sea surface and the sea bed will be
Speed*time
Thus the speed is given and that is 1531
And the time taken is 3.42 to come back.. note that the sound travels twice the distance within the same time thus
1531*3.42/2 = 2618.01 ms

ANSWER :

To Find : The distance of the sea bed from sea.

Time taken between transmission and detection ( t ) = 3.42 sec

Speed of ultrasound = 1531 m/s.

Ultrasound travelled  a Distance = 2 × depth of sea = 2d

2d = Speed of sound × time

= 1531 × 3.42 = 5236m

2d = 5236m

d = 5236/2

d = 2618 m.

Hence, the distance of the sea bed from sea is 2618 m.
