Suppose x be cost price of the item.

To gain 8% profit, he should sell it at -

Selling price = x × (100+8)/100

Selling price = x × 108/100

To give 10% discount, printed price is calculated as -

Marked price = selling price × 100/(100-10)

Marked price = x × 108/100 × 100/90

12000 = x × 108/90

x = 12000 × 90/108

x = 10000 Rs

Hence, actual cost of the sofa must be 10000 Rs.
