A shopkeeper buys 180 articles at Rs 40 each from a wholesaler. He fixes the selling price per article to gain the profit of 45% of the cost price. He sells 2/5 th of the articles at this selling price. He then reduces the selling price per article so that his profit is only 20% of the cost price. Answer:

30% gain

Step-by-step explanation:

increase 45% of 40 = 45/100*40

               = Rs.58

no.of articles sold at Rs.58 = 2/5 of 180

              = 72 articles

amount he got from this = 58*72

            = Rs.4176

remaining articles = 180 - 72

            = 108 articles

increase 20% of 40 = 20/100*40

           = Rs.48

no.of articles sold at Rs.48 = 108

amount he got from this = 48*108

            = Rs.5184

total selling price = 5184+4176

            = Rs.9360

total cost price = 180*40

           = Rs.7200

(100+x)/100*7200 = 9360

100+x = 9360/72

          = 130

x = 130-100

x = 30

gain = 30%
