let number of books be x
8000/x+40-8000/x=10
on solving it u will get a quadratic equation as follows
x^2+40x-32000=0
on further solving it u will get
x= 160

Let the shopkeeper had bought x numbers of books. And it costs 8000.
Now, if he will bought 40 more books then the total number of books would be (x+40) and it costs also 8000.
And from the question we can know that if he had bought 40 more books then the each book will cost 10.
From this we can build a equation -
x+40 = 8000÷10
=> x+40 = 800
=> x = 800-40
=> x = 760
So, from this we can know that the shopkeeper had bought 760 books.
Now, if he will bought 40 more books then the total number of books would be (x+40) and it costs also 8000.
And from the question we can know that if he had bought 40 more books then the each book will cost 10.
