A shopkeeper buys an article whose list price is rs8000 at some rate of discount from a wholesaler .He sells the article to a consumer at list price. The sales are intra state and the rate of GST is 18% .If the shopkeeper pay a tax of rs72 to the state government ,find the rate of discount at which he bought the article from the wholesaler.

Answer is 12%

let the discount be 'x'%

the discounted value is =  8000-8000*x/100=8000-80x

since the transactions are intra-state ,i.e., within the state ,

SGST = 18/2=9%

given SGST=Rs.72

9/100 (8000-80x)=72

8000-80x=72*100/9=800

8000-800=80x

x=90.

The wholesaler have given a discount of Rs.90 while selling the article to the shopkeeper.
