Given:

Profit on selling a pencil = Rs.1

Loss on selling an eraser = 20 paise

Loss when 35 pencils sold = Rs 10

Profit when 100 erasers sold = Rs. 25

To find:

  1. Number of erasers sold
  2. Number of pencils sold

Solution:

Let the total numbers of eraser sold be = x

Now,

Total Loss = Loss by eraser - Profit by pencil

Substituting the values -

10= (0.10x) - (35×1)

10 = 0.10x - 35

10 + 35 = 0.10x

45 = 0.10x

x = 450

Similarly,

Let the total number of pencils be = y

Total profit = Profit by pencil - Loss by eraser

Substituting the values -

25=( 1× y) - (100× 0.10)

25 = y-10

y = 25 + 10

y = 35

Answer: The erasers sold were 450 and pencils sold were 35
