Answer:

The number of pencils sold on that month will be 150.

To find:

The number of pencils sold on a particular month

Solution:

Profit on selling 1 pen = Rs 1.

Loss on selling 1 pencil = 30 paisa.

In the given month, he sold = 40 pens and some pencils.

Profit incurred on 40 pens = Rs 1 X 40 = Rs 40

Overall, he had = Rs 5 loss.

∴ Total loss occurred by selling pencils

= Rs 40 + Rs 5 = Rs 45.

∴  No. of pencils sold

\begin{array} { c } { = \frac { R s 45 } { 30 \text { paisa } } } \\\\ { = \frac { 45 \times 100 \text { paisa } } { 30 \text { paisa } } } \\\\ { = \frac { 4500 } { 30 } = 150 } \end{array}

Thus, the total number of pencils sold on this month is 150.
