First discount was of 20%

Step-by-step explanation:

Let the first discount is x%

Since the marked price is Rs. 180, the price in which the article is to be sold after the first discount is

= Rs. 180 (1 - x/100)

After the second discount of 25% on the price Rs. 180 (1 - x/100), the selling price becomes

= Rs. 180 (1 - x/100) (1 - 25/100)

= Rs. 180 (1 - x/100) * 75/100

= Rs. 135 (1 - x/100)

By the given condition,

135 (1 - x/100) = 108

or, 135 - 135x/100 = 108

or, 135x/100 = 135 - 108

or, 135x/100 = 27

or, x = (27 * 100)/135

or, x = 20

∴ the first discount was of 20%
