Given :

A shopkeeper marks his goods 16% above the cost price and allows a discount of 16%.

To Find :

What percentage he gain or lose.

Solution :

Let the cost price of goods be = 100

Marked price of goods = 100 +(16% of 100)

                                      = 100 + (0.16 × 100)

                                      = 116

Selling price after 16% discount  = 116 - (16% × 116)

                                                     = 116 -( 0.16 × 116)

                                                     = 116 - 18.56

                                                     = 97.44

selling price is < cost price = Loss

Loss = 100 - 97.44 = 2.56%

He lost  2.56% on his goods.
