Let cost of 1 book purchased is Rs x

So,

The number of books purchased for Rs 960 will be = 960 / x

Now according to question,

If cost of one book is Rs 8 less

Then

The new cost of 1 book will be = Rs ( x - 8 )

And The number of books will be = 960 / ( x - 8 )

Also it is given,

If cost Rs 8 less then 4 books more can be purchased

So we can form the equation as :

-   = 4

= 4

= 4

= 4

7680 = 4 ( x² - 8x )

7680 = 4x² - 32x

4x² - 32x - 7680 = 0

Dividing whole equation by 4

x² - 8x - 1920 = 0

x² - 48x + 40x - 1920 = 0

x ( x - 48 ) + 40 ( x - 48 ) = 0

( x + 40 ) ( x - 48 ) = 0

x = - 40 or x = 48

Neglecting -40 as cost of book can not be negative, So cost of book will be Rs 48 each

Hence,

Cost of 1 book will be Rs 48 each.
