Solution :

Increased MP = (MP)+ 30/100 (MP)

Discount offered on new MP = 130/100(MP) - 40/100(130/100)MP

= 78/100(MP)

acutal discount offered on original MP = 100 - 78 = 22%

So he offered 22% discount on original MP

Hope that helps

Let the marked price be x

Find the price with 30% raise:

30% of x = 0.3x

Price with 30% raise = x + 0.3x = 1.3x

Find the price after 40% discount:

40% = 0.4 (1.3x) = 0.52x

Price after 40% discount = 1.3x - 0.52x = 0.78x

Find the actual discount:

Discount = x - 0.78x = 0.22x

Discount percentage = (0.22 ÷ x) x 100 = 22%

Answer: The discount is 22%
