Let the buying price be x.

The selling price at 12% profit is :

1.12x

If he sells at 39 more the selling price becomes :

1.12x + 39

If he sells at this price the profit is 18% hence we can equate this to 1.18x

1.12x + 39 = 1.18x

39 = 1.18x - 1.12 x

39 = 0.06x

x = 39/0.06

x = 650

The cost price (buying price) = Rs 650
