a shopkeeper selling an article at a discount of 25% loses rs 125; if he allows10% discount ,he gains rs 250 . find the marked price and the cost price of the article

discount=25%

SP=MP*(100-discount%)/100

=x*(100-25)/100

=x*75/100

=3x/4

loss=125

so CP=SP+loss=3x/4+125

now the 2nd case comes...

discount=10%

so SP=90/100*x

=9x/10

gain=250

CP=SP-gain

=9x/10-250

so CP should remain same i.e

3x/4+125=9x/10-250

125+250=9x/10-3x/4

375=(18x-15x)/20

375=3x/20

x=375*20/3

=2500

so MP=rs 2500

CP=3x/4+125

=3*2500/4+125

=1875+125

=rs 2000
