So,

Let his cost price be x.

Now,

x — (x×0.2) = 12. (From the given data)

x * 0.8 = 12.

x = 15.

Now we know that the cost price of toffees was 15 Rs.

Next statement in the question asks how many toffees the man should sell for a rupee to gain 20% profit. (Assumption here is the toffees being refered to in both statements of the question are the same and hence will have the same cost price)

20% profit means 1.2 * CP (cost price)

Means, 1.2 * 15 which equals 18 Rs.

Mathematically,

n * 1 = 18

Hence, n=18.
