Given,

A shopkeeper sold a material with 40% discount and the cost is 480.

To Find,

The original cost of material? =?

Solution,

We can solve the question as follows:

It is given that a shopkeeper sold a material for a 40% discount. The cost of the material is Rs. 480. We have to find the original cost of the material.

Let the original cost of the material be = x

If he sold it for a 40% discount, then the final cost will be equal to the original cost subtracted by 40% of the original cost.

Therefore,

Final cost = x - 40% of x

It is given to us that final cost = Rs. 480

480 = x - \frac{40}{100} x (We can write percentage in its decimal/fraction form by

                         dividing it with 100)

480 = \frac{100x - 40x}{100}

480 = \frac{60x}{100}

480 = \frac{3}{5}x

x = 480 * \frac{5}{3}

x = 800

  • Instead of doing the above calculations, we can also use the formula:

         Final cost = Original cost* \frac{(100 - Discount)}{100}

Hence, the original cost of the material is Rs. 800.
