Distance = Total distance travelled

= (5.4+7.8)m = 13.2m

  • Displacement = Shortest distance between starting and ending point.

  • The guys walks 5.4 m west, then he walks 7.8m east, se we can tell that he will be east to his starting point.

  • He walks 5.4m west, then he covers 5.4 east to come back to his starting point. Then he travels 2.4m east more. (Since he walks 7.8m east)

  • So, the magnitude of displacement is 2.4m and direction is east.
