Every year on 14th or 15th January this festival is celebrated. The day starts with an early morning holy bath in a river. They offer prayers to the sun. According to hindu mythology sun is one of the gods.

Meaning of makar sankranti:

The word makar means Capricorn and sankranti mean transitions which makes it mean the transition of the sun in the Capricorn. In additinon to this, the occasion is a very holy and auspicious according to Hinduism and it is celebrated as a festival.
