Explanation:

“Money makes the world go round” – this popular saying suggests that money can do just about anything. This is especially true in our increasingly capitalistic world, where money is a necessity. Some even regard money as the panacea to all societal woes. However, the question is, can money really be the solution to all problems? I view that money is not always a solution to problems, but the creator of problems as well.

Firstly, money has been used as a tool to incite wars. Throughout the history of mankind, billions of dollars have been spent to provoke armed conflict. This has taken the lives of many, including innocent civilians. For instance, billions of dollars were spent on the Vietnam War. The development of chemical-based weapons such as Agent Orange has not only claimed the lives of many, but the lives of subsequent generations as well. Numerous children have been born with birth defects due to Agent Orange. Another example would be the case of the ongoing Isreali-Palestenian conflict. Despite claiming the lives of many innocent civilians, billions of dollars are still spent to develop arms such as the Isreali Iron Dome and the Palestinian Fajr-5 missiles. It is no doubt that money has played a role in escalating the problem of armed conflict.

Next, money causes individuals to hinge one’s happiness on extravagant material gains. We live in the age of consumerism. We are constantly bombarded with advertisements urging us to indulge in big-brand products containing labels such as Nike, Louis Vuitton and Fred Perry. It is not unsurprising to see teenagers donning branded shoes to school nowadays, as compared to the ubiquitous brand-less white canvas shoes of the past. While there is nothing wrong with branded products, the idea of individuals gaining life satisfaction by spending money on branded products is problematic. This is because, the attachment of happiness to material gains is superficial. With ever changing trends, branded products are not permanent and being in the vicious cycle of spending money on them to be happy is simply not sustainable.

However, many might argue that money is also a solution to many problems. Money is often spent by many nations and multinational companies on research and development (R&D). This has resulted in technological advances that benefits mankind. One such breakthrough is the chickenpox vaccination developed by pharmaceutical giant Smithkline Beecham (currently known as Glaxo Smithkline). With such a vaccination, humans will one day no longer have to endure the pains of having chickenpox. Nonetheless, spending money on research and development might not necessarily yield results. For instance, the Singapore government has spent billions of dollars on an R&D complex, Biopolis. Till today, critics argue that the investments in R&D has yet to bear fruit with a major breakthrough.

Is money really the solution to all problems? It can only be a solution if individuals spend money wisely. I believe that leaders of our time have to carefully consider on how money is utilized. How this precious man-made resource is used is dependent on the wisdom of its creator, mankind. Money can be a solution, and can be a problem.
