Villi are finger like projections of the mucosa layer extending into the lumen of hollow structures.

Example: Villi in the intestine.

Anatomy:

They are protrusions extending inwards mainly due to protrusions of the lamina propria component of the mucosa layer.

Function/ Physiology:

The most important function is to increase the surface area. Absorption is a function of surface area. Because of larger surface area, the absorption of drugs, lipids, proteins, carbohydrates occur from these regions.

Villi are richly supplied by blood vessels, hence quick absorption of nutrients take place.

They are mostly associated with cuboidal/ columnar epithelium tissue to give a brush bordered appearance.
