This bacteria are special since they live in some of the most harsh habitats such as extremely salty areas halophiles ,hot spring thermoacidophiles and marshy areas methanogens.Bacteria differ from other bacteria in having a different cell wall structure and this feature is responsible for survival in extreme conditions . Methanogens are present in gut of ruminant animals such as cows and buffaloes and they are responsible for production of methane (biogas ) from the dung of this animals. They are primitive in evolutionary point of view. They are considered as "the oldest living fossils".Most of them behave as obligate anaerobes ( oxygen is poison to these bacteria). They are tolerant to extreme heat ,cold and pH because of their membrane structure.
