Historically, Muslims have used the Arabic word taṣawwuf to identify the practice of Sufis. Mainstream scholars of Islam define Tasawwuf or Sufism as the name for the inner or esoteric dimension of Islam which is supported and complemented by outward or exoteric practices of Islam, such as Sharia.

Sufism is the concept of attaining a personal relationship with Allah (SWT). Although we all have a base level friendship with Allah (wilayaat 'amma), they seek a more personal and more profound friendship (wilayaat khaasah).
Sufism is, in it of itself, perfectly fine. However, as logic may dictate, the more complex a subject the more likely laymen are to make errors. As this is a very difficult science (Tasawwuf), there are many innovations and innovators, so it is best to be wary.
Sufism is only true if it is based on Sharia (Islamic Law) and follows the Sunnah of Nabi (S). Out of personal experience, true Sufis are really the best people in the world.
