Who doesn’t know about the famous Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman? You probably know him as CV Raman! When we talk about physics, his name comes first and instantly pops up in everyone’s head. Born in the year 1888, CV Raman was a physicist who lived till 1970.

He is the man who discovered the phenomenon of light interacting with molecule and donating energy to the molecule. CV Raman studied how the light changed its colors and noticed the vibration of molecules. This is known as the Raman spectroscopy. It basically relies on fingerprints. What are fingerprints? The change of color is known as the fingerprint of the molecule. Do you know that Raman spectroscopy is used in famous labs around the world? This is used for analyzing the living tissues and cell. CV Raman came from an economically challenged family. His father used to teach Mathematics and Physics which gives us a clear picture that probably Raman did learn a lot from his father.
Raman had seven siblings and he was the second child out of eight. When Raman was just four years old, his father found a much better job and could provide for the family. His father became a lecturer and had a casual attitude towards religion. Despite being a Brahman, Raman father did not pay attention to strict rituals.
As a young boy, Raman enjoyed Science and English. He even got scholarship and went to Presidency College.
Achievements
In the year 1954, CV Raman was honored with a Bharat Ratna. His contribution towards light scattering helped him earn a Nobel Prize for Physics in 1930.
Raman was teaching as a lecturer in University of Calcutta. In fact, he was the first ever Palit Professor of Physics.
CV Raman was an extraordinary man, who hailed from Madras and made the nation proud with his intelligence and talent. Even today, academicians teach CV Raman theory to students. He is fondly remembered on national Science Day as well.

When a beam of light is scattered by a transparent liquid, the scattered light contains a frequency of very low intensity not present in the incident radiation,’ He described the results of this experiment in his first book “Molecular Diffractions of Light’ (1922).
He emerged as a true international figure and was awarded Nobel Prize in Physics in 1930. He founded the Indian Academy of Sciences at Bangalore in 1934. In 1949, he started his own research institute known as Raman Research Institute in Bangalore and after a period of years, this institute has gained international stature with research activity in liquid crystals, astrophysics and radio astronomy
