The influential transformation in irrigation systems over the past 30 years can be seen from gravity methods to pressurized micro watering or sprinklers. Pressurized watering systems provide producers with excellent control over the amount of water utilized and, for suitably created and distributed systems, better regularity of irrigation than gravity systems. Canals, furrows and soil borders are some of the examples of gravity irrigation methods while, drip, pump and sprinkler irrigation are the examples of pressurized micro-irrigation system.

It may be said that the arrival of the Diesel or electrically operated pumps have replaced the Persian wheel system of irrigation.
