STORY
I was always very confident about my gift of the gab. Wherever and whenever there was a speech, debate competition I always emerged as a winner. My room was overflowing with trophies and awards. So when my school announced that there would be an inter-state extempore competition and the final round would be at the Rashtarpati Bhavan I already started dreaming of receiving the gold medal from the hands of the President.
My parents and teachers warned me not to be overconfident. They advised me to practice speaking. I laughed at their suggestion. I didn’t need practice. I was perfect.
The day came for the preliminary round. I started from home casually. On the way I stopped for a cold drink. When I reached the venue I saw the nervous anxious faces. I jeered at them and prided over my confidence. To show off my don’t care attitude I took a chilled drink of ice tea and awaited for my chance in the air-conditioned lobby.
Soon my name was announced and I was called on stage. My topic was ‘Rocket Science’. Not at all difficult I thought. But when I opened my mouth not a word came out. My voice had disappeared due to the cold drinks I had gulped down. Not a word could I utter.
I could hardly believe that this could happen to me. I made a complete fool of myself like the overconfident hare in the fable: the hare and the tortoise.
