A silver article generally turns black when kept in the open for a few days. The article when rubbed with toothpaste again starts shining.
(i) Why do they turn black? Name the phenomenon involved.
(ii) Name the black substance formed and write its formula.

1. They turn black bcoz they react with sulphur present in air. The phenomenon is corrosion.
2. The black substance formed is silver sulphide.(Ag2S).

(ii) The black colour substance formed is silver oxide
Ag2O

Jennydsilva: Not silver oxide.. they react with sulphur present air to form silver sulphide...
sunnydey: both oxygen and sulphur are present in atmosphere
