During the electrolysis of lead bromide, Graphite being inert electrode is used as both anode and cathode. Lead bromide dissociates to form Pb2+ ions are discharged at the cathode as neutral lead atoms by accepting electrons whereas Br− ions are discharged at the anode as neutral bromine atoms by giving up electrons.
Hence, a silver-grey deposit of lead is obtained at the cathode and reddish-brown fumes of bromine are obtained at the anode.
