Mahatma Gandhi is very famous in India as “Bapu” or “Rastrapita”. The full name of him is Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. He was a great freedom fighter who led India as a leader of the nationalism against British rule. He was born on 2nd of October in 1869 in Porbandar, Gujarat, India. He died on 30th of January in 1948. M.K. Gandhi was assassinated by the Hindu activist, Nathuram Godse, who was hanged later as a punishment by the government of India. He has been given another name by the Rabindranath Tagore as “Martyr of the Nation” since 1948.

The Great Soul, Mahatma Gandhi is called the Father of the Nation. He was a freedom fighter who did not believe in guns and violence to achieve independence from the British rule. It was his philosophy of truth and non-violence that paved the way for the freedom from the British.

His full name was Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. He was born on October 2, 1869 in Gujarat to Karamchand Uttamchand Gandhi and Putlibai.

The birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, Gandhi Jayanti, is celebrated on October 2 as a national event across India. This day is observed across the entire world as the International Day of Non-violence. Even today he is honoured as the symbol of hope not only for India but the world.

Mahatma Gandhi was a strong opponent of discrimination on the basis of race, caste, skin color and religion. His vision of equality inspired people across the world to raise their voice against any kind of discrimination.

Mahatma Gandhi said, “The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others." This shows his selfless sacrifice for the people of India.

His non-violence and satyagraha policy lead India to achieve Independence without shedding a drop of blood.

Mahatma Gandhi believed in simple living and used to wear traditional Indian dhoti and a shawl. He was a person of great humility.

Gandhi believed that all human beings are God’s special people and must be treated equally irrespective of their caste, color, language, creed, region, and religion. He campaigned for the empowerment of the lower caste of the Untouchables- whom he called Harijans (the children of God).

In 1942, Gandhi urged Indians to stop cooperating with the British and called for Quit India movement. The story of India’s struggle for Independence was long and many people sacrificed their lives during the process. Finally, India achieved freedom in August, 1947.

The Father of the Nation was assassinated on January 30, 1948, by Nathuram Godse.
