Question:

A single letter is selected at random from the word 'probability'. The probability that it is not a vowel is?

To Find:

Probability of not getting a vowel.

Answer:

Favourable outcomes : p, r, b, b, l, t, y.

Total number of favourable outcomes : 7.

Total outcomes = p, r, o, b, a, b, i, l, i, t, y .

Total number of favourable outcomes = 11 .

We know that, probability = \huge{\frac{Favourable \:outcomes}{Total\: number\: of \:outcomes}}

So, Probability of not getting a vowel = \huge{\frac{7}{11}} .

Additional information:

Probability: The probability of a particular event of an experiment is the chance or likelihood of that event happening.

Outcome: The result of a trial is called an outcome.

Event: One or more outcomes of a trial are called its events. When you throw a coin getting a tail is one of its event.

Random Experiment: An experiment whose all possible outcomes are known to us but the result or you can say that exact outcome is not known is a random experiment.

Answer:

Hi mate.

In the word " PROBABILITY "

Total number of Letters = 11 .

Number of vowels = ( o, a, i, i ) .

Thus the required probability = 4 / 11 .

Here, first we select a letter from the given word and after that we observe if it is a vowel or not. The letter ‘Y’ might produce the sound of a long E when we pronounce the word PROBABILITY, but when we select it out of the 11 letters and observe, we will not say it is ‘E’, it would just be a consonant. So, letter ‘Y’ would not be considered as a vowel in this case, and the answer would be FOUR out of eleven (not 5 out of eleven).

So, according to your question,

Not a vowel :

Total number of letters = 11 .

Number of non vowels = 11 - 4 ( Total 11 words - Vowels )

So, The required Probability = 7 / 11 .

Hope it helps you mate.
