A slice of lemon starts giving out its juice when a kilogram weight is placed on it directly. (a) what is the minimum force required to produce the same effect using a lemon squeezer? given the position of the centre of the lemon slice from the fulcrum is 3 cm and it's length is 10cm. (b) what is the velocity ratio of this machine? (c) which class of lever is it?

Given:

A slice of lemon starts giving out its juice when a kilogram weight is placed on it directly.

To find:

(a) what is the minimum force required to produce the same effect using a lemon squeezer? given the position of the centre of the lemon slice from the fulcrum is 3 cm and it's length is 10cm. (b) what is the velocity ratio of this machine? (c) which class of lever is it?

Solution:

(a) The minimum force required to produce the same effect using a lemon squeezer is the same as when a kilogram weight is placed on it directly.

(b) The velocity ratio = Distance moved by the effort / Distance moved by the load

= 10 cm / 3 cm

∴ The velocity ratio = 3.33

(c) In a lemon squeezer, the lemon (load) is at the middle, the fulcrum of the squeezer is at one end and the push is given by hand (effort) is at the other end. So, a lemon squeezer is a class II lever (second class lever).
