1) hydrochloric acid (HCl) is an acid which is realesed by the glands in the stomach which makes the stomach acidic in nature so pepsin can break down the protiens (pepsin only works on acidic substances)

2) and when HCL is released it damages the inner linings of the stomach since its a very strong acid, but Mucus protects and prevents this from happening
