A small ring a of mass m-kg is attached at an end of a light string the other end of which is tied to a block b of mass 2m. The ring is free to move on a fixed smooth horizontal rod as shown. Find tension in the string when it becomes vertical.

Given:

The mass of the ring is m

The mass of the block is 2m

To find:

The tension in the string.

Solution:

Using the conservation of energy.

mv²/2=mgl+mgl/3

v²=2mgl+2mgl/3

Taking LCM

v²=8gl/3

v=√8gl/3

Therefore T= 14 mg

So the tension in the string is 14 mg.
