A small town has one fire engine and one ambulance available for emergencies. The probability that the fire engine is available when needed is 0.98, and the probability that the ambulance is available when called is 0.92. Given : Probability ambulance is available when called = 0.92

Probability fire engine is available when called = 0.98

To Find : Probability both ambulance and fire engine are available when called

Solution:

  • According to Law of Total Probability, for independent events A and B

                         P(A and B) = P(A) × P(B)                    (1)

  • Here, probability of ambulance arriving [P(A)] and probability of fire engine arriving[P(B)] are independent as one will occur regardless of the other.
  • So substituting given values in (1)

                           ⇒ P(A and B) = 0.92 × 0.98

                           ⇒ P(A and B) = 0.9016

Therefore, Probability that both ambulance and fire engine will arrive is 0.9016.
