I didn't understand the question, but if you are saying that what is the procedure to reduce the distance then we have to increase friction which is acting between the surface and the smooth ball by making the surface rough or by increasing the mass of the object. But if you are telling that how did the smooth ball covered a small distance then the answer is, increasing the area of table's surface also increases friction in between them (example=you can't slide as far across ice with shoes as you can on the thin blades of skates.) which is why the ball covered a smaller distance.
