Explanation:

The first thing that came up to my ind upon reading this line "a smooth surface on which it is difficult to stand without falling" is a smooth wet floor. It is extremely difficult to keep standing ion it because there is absolutely no friction which helps one to stand erect against av surface. Moreover, there is no support or grip that one can cling to. So, there are greatest chances of falling down suddenly. Recently faced such an experience. Our maid servant had just washed the floor and i had to stand in one room while she was cleaning my study room at that time. I almost slipped down and it could have harmed myself if she had not been there to rush up to me and help me instantly.
