Answer:

Given:

Wavelength of the sodium street light, λ = 5000 \AA

                                                                   = 5000 × 10⁻¹⁰ m

                                                                   = 5 × 10⁻⁷ m

Find:

The frequency and wave number of the light.

Solution:

As we know, λ = c/ν

where λ = wavelength of light

c = velocity of light = 3 × 10⁸ m/s

ν = frequency of light

Now, we have

ν = c/λ

ν = (3 × 10⁸) / (5 × 10⁻⁷)

ν = 0.6 × 10⁸⁺⁷ = 0.6 × 10¹⁵ s⁻¹

∴ Frequency = ν = 0.6 × 10¹⁵ s⁻¹

Now, wave number, 1/λ  = 1/((5 × 10⁻⁷)

                                        = 0.2 × 10⁷ m⁻¹

Hence, Frequency = ν = 0.6 × 10¹⁵ s⁻¹

Wave number = 1/λ  = 0.2 × 10⁷ m⁻¹
