The time referred to earth’s rotation on its own axis with reference to stars, is called a Sidereal Day. The duration of such a rotation is 24 sidereal hours (23 hours and 56 minutes by a normal clock).

The earth’s rotation with reference to a fixed star is called a Stellar Day.

The average of true solar days during an entire year, is referred to as the Mean Solar Day.
