A solar-thermal power plant in Ladakh receives an average solar radiation energy of 5 kW-hr

per m2 per day on its solar collectors that have a total area of 150 ×250 m2

. 20 % of this

energy is lost to reflection, re-radiation and transmission losses. The rest is stored as thermal

energy in a molten salt reservoir whose temperature is kept at 400 K. A heat engine cycle

operates between the molten salt reservoir and the ambient which can be assumed to be at

288 K.

a) Determine the maximum efficiency that the heat engine can have and the maximum

overall efficiency of the solar thermal power plant.

b) If the generated electricity is sold at Rs. 8 per KW-hr, plot the annual revenue of the solar

thermal power plant against the heat engine cycle efficiency​
