A bought it for Rs 625

Let the CP of the item for A be Rs x.

Given, he sold it at 20% profit.

So, SP for A = (100+Profit)% of CP

= 120% of Rs x

= Rs 1.2x

So, CP of the item for B = Rs 1.2x

Given, he sold it at 20% profit.

So, SP of the item for B = 120% of Rs 1.2x

= Rs1.44x

So, the CP of the item for C = Rs 1.44x

Given, he sold it at 20% loss.

So, SP of the item for C = 80% of Rs 1.44x

= Rs 1.152

This is the CP for D which is Rs 720.

So, 1.152x = 720

⇒ x = 720/1.152

= Rs 625
