Higher the mass per unit volume greater will be the density. Because the molecules in the gases are apart from each other and so their volume are always smaller(almost negligible) in comparison with solids where the molecules are attached together and so they have a definite volume. Hence, the mass/volume ratio is higher for solids so they have higher density.
