A solid iron ball is dropped in mercury contained in a beaker.
i) Will the ball float or sink?
ii) What will be the apparent weight of the ball ?​

  1. Since the density of iron is less than that of mercury therefore, the buoyant force acting on the ball will be greater than it's weight and thus it will float in the medium. ( density of iron is : 7.87 g/ml. density of mercury : 13.5 g/mL)
  2. While floating the weight of object gets cancelled out by the buoyant force acting on it, therefore it's apparent weight becomes zero.
