A solid is crystalline has a high melting point and is water soluble. Describe the nature of the solid.

The solid is an ionic compound.

CRYSTALLINE: due to the fact that it is made up of a ion and cation and hence have strong electrostatic force between them.

HIGH MELTING POINT: the strong electrostatic force (mentioned above) is very tough to break which requires high amount of heat.

WATER SOLUBLE: water has high dielectric constant which is enough to break the strong electrostatic force.

Other characteristics are:
1) Good conductor of electricity in aqueous or molten state (due to the presence of ions)
2) Dissociates when current is passed through its aqueous or molten state.
3) Good conductor of heat
4) Non-volatile
